History-Making Phil-Am Ballerina Comes Home to Manila This Summer

Netflix might be taking over our lives but that doesn’t mean you can skip out on catching a live performance. This April, it is a particularly special occassion to watch Stella Abrera at the Maybank Performing Arts Theater for “An Intimate Evening with Stella Abrera & American Ballet Stars.”
Filipina-American Stella is the principal ballerina of the American Ballet Theater. She is the first of her kind to ever receive that honor, and it’s something she worked hard for, too. According to Buzzfeed, she began dancing at the age of 5, following her older sister’s footsteps.
Jumping forward to 2001, Stella became a soloist at the ABT, five years after she joined the corps de ballet of the prestigious group. In between her performances in Giselle, La Bayadere, and The Dream, a physical injury threatened her career. She was found to have a “slight herniated disk and an overstretched sciatic nerve.” She spent months in treatment and physical thearapy for almost 18 months. Her ballet training had to go back to the basics. Frustrating and emotionally draining it was, Stella managed to spin herself back into fighting form.
So it’s quite notable that she’s her for a set of classes and shows. In collaboration with the Ayala Foundation, Stella is going to show off what she’s all about along with eight American Ballet Stars: Arron Scott, Blaine Hoven, Catherine Hurlin, Gillian Murphy, Isabelle Boylston, Joo Won Ahn, Jose Sebastian, And Roman Zhurbin. From Apr. 2 to 4, they will be conduction master classes at Steps Dance Studio, Makati. Shortly after on Apr. 6 will be the gala night of their performance leading up to their regular show on Apr. 7.
Proceeds from the show will be for the benefit of the Center of Excellence in Public Elementary Eduction (CENTEX), the flagship educational program of the Ayala Foundation.
