Profiles: Interior Designer Nix Alañon

Culture / August 28, 2017

Only a few understand designing rooms. Nix Alañon is one of them. The principal designer for FTA Design and the creative mastermind behind the interior decoration and furniture line Phoenix Home, Nix has imprinted a vibrant, luxurious aesthetic in the spaces he fills.

At the launch of Phoenix Home’s latest collection, I got the chance to ask the busy man a few questions–some of which I think you design fans are dying to know.

What’s your aesthetic?

I would say that I have a global design aesthetic and always aim to achieve a timeless look in any of my designs. I love contrasts: combining different finish textures, or objects in different materials or from different eras.

Could you tell me more about your design process?

It usually starts from an idea that I am currently fixated on. This could be a color or a color combination; a form or shape that I find interesting. I start from there and use it as a base and make the rest of my design elements work around that idea.

Who’s your dream client?

Giovanni Bataglia. I don’t know how her home looks like, but if it’s any close to how she dresses up like, then we’re definitely up for some good fun!

Who’s your favorite interior decorator?

At present, I am into the works of Jean Louis Denoit. I love his refined style, controlled choice of colors and symmetry in his works. Nate Berkus for establishing himself as a brand and his organic approach in his designs. Both through the interiors or in the products that he creates.

What inspires you?

Travel is my ultimate source of inspiration as it gives me a fresh outlook on design and applications. It always feels great coming home with a rested and productive mind, too.
