Unusual Hair Products and What They’re For

Beauty / June 16, 2017

Many of you may have stumbled upon the long aisle of hair products, thinking what this much space is for if all we need are some good ol’ shampoo, conditioner, and the occasional hair spray. To keep you from getting lost in this part of the beauty department—or the hair section of that e-commerce site you frequent—let me prime you on some hair products that could be beneficial for you.

Dry Conditioner

I’ve talked about the wonders of dry shampoo here on my column, but I don’t think I’ve introduced you to the magic of dry conditioner.

Products like the Tigi Dirty Secret Dry Conditioner are equipped with dry-conditioning, spray-on formula that delivers shinier, smoother strands without weighing it down. It helps reduce frizz, flyaways, and stray strands, thanks to its weightless aerosol formula that keeps your hair looking hydrated without washing it.

Purple Shampoo

For those who went blonde this summer, keep it from looking rusty by toning it with the right shampoo. Purple shampoos aren’t colored for the novelty; they serve to cancel out warmth in (natural or dyed) blonde, gray, and white hair.

The Drybar Blonde Ale Brightening Shampoo counteracts brass notes and adds sheen as it cleanses the hair with its brightening lemon extracts. Infused with chamomile and keratin, this product boosts tones and moisturizes to help prevent damage caused by bleaching.

Styling Powders

Having fine hair is both blessing and curse. While it may be considered low maintenance, it can be a chore to style them. Styling powders work specifically for this case; these add texture and increase volume in straight, flat, limp hair.

Try on dry hair: the Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion is a hair texturizer that instantly volumizes hair and creates a matte texture. This helps boost strands with naturally derived bulking agents including kaolin clay and acacia gum. Plus, witness it change from its powder state to a lightweight, absorbent lotion for that extra entertainment.

Sea Salt Sprays

Bring the beach back home when you spritz on some sea salt spray. This volumizing product is great for creating textured tresses and all-organic waves. Sea salt sprays lend grip by drying your locks to encourage natural bend in the hair.

Infused with orange flower, neroli, and rosewood blend perfumes, Lush Sea Spray uses fresh seawater and sea salt to add volume naturally. Scrunch it up into your waves and if you ever find it a tad bit dehydrating, layer it up with your trusty hair serum or leave-in conditioner for some sheen.

Hair Fragrance

For those who want extra oomph to their hair—and I don’t mean volume this time!—finish off your freshly styled hair with a scent specifically for your tresses. Our hair easily picks up unwanted aromas around us that we wish to eliminate. And sometimes, our trusty perfume can’t help save it.

Enter hair fragrances like the Sacha Juan Protective Hair Perfume. Boasting an anti-odor technology, this scent is a refreshing blend of lychee, peach, and roses. Don’t be fooled by its sweet notes, though; it is, after all, a serious haircare product with its infusion of keratin and silk oils.
