Fashion and beauty labels that give back

Beauty / October 19, 2018

A lot would be amiss if people won’t do what they can to help make the world a better place. People suffer, communities bear the scars of past conflicts, and causes need attention.

International labels are fully aware and have adopted it in their company values. They’re using their voice to remind us of the need to help.

It also leaves us with no excuse but to be more conscious of how everyday activities can be used to make people’s lives better.

Recently, Michael Kors launched “Watch Hunger Stop”—a video campaign in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP).

It features a colorful T-shirt designed by Brazilian artist Eli Subrack of Avaf (Assume Vivid Astro Focus). For every shirt purchased, Michael Kors will donate 100 meals to the WFP, to help in the United Nations mission to end food hunger by 2030.

The initiative will continue until March 2019, with Michael Kors planning to donate up to 2 million meals.

Breast cancer awareness is a cause that hits close to home. In 1998, McCartney’s mother, Linda, died of it.

The campaign that launched stellamccartneycares.org is a film, “All Is Love,” with Idris Elba and the stories of breast cancer survivors. On the website are interviews and various endeavors they advocate, such as The Hello Beautiful Foundation and The SCAR Project.

They also donated 1,000 “Louise Listening” bras, an undergarment specifically designed for breast cancer survivors.

The website also offers the  Rose Romancing Soft Cup Bra and the All is Love Bandana. Purchases of each item help the Linda McCartney Centre in Liverpool, the Hello Beautiful Foundation in London, and Memorial Sloan Kettering in the United States.

When it comes to brands with a continuing effort to help people in need, there’s Toms and its One for One model. With every purchase of Toms products, the company helps in giving shoes, sight, water, safe birth and bullying prevention services to the less fortunate.

It offers the Giving Shoes, designed for school and play children who receive them can get closer to achieving their dreams.

Toms Eyewear purchases help the company’s initiative to provide prescription glasses, sight-saving surgery and optical treatments.

This is aside from the company’s safe water initiative via  Toms Roasting Co. Coffee, how Toms bags purchases help deliver essentials for safe births, and how Toms High Road Backpack purchases help counselors prevent and respond to bullying cases.

On the beauty front, there is MAC’s Viva Glam lipstick that features different artists and campaigns that forward the cause. Proceeds from every Viva Glam lipstick sold is given to the MAC Aids Fund that helps organizations that advocate HIV/AIDS awareness.

The fund kicked off with RuPaul leading the campaign, followed by the likes of Lady Gaga, Elton John, Debbie Harry, Boy George, Cyndi Lauper, Nicki Minaj, Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, Dita Von Teese, Shirley Manson, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Taraji P. Henson and, most recently, Sia.

There are currently six Viva Glam lipsticks available, with different colors and finishes, suited to various personalities. So, hey, consider this when buying a new lipstick.

Lush’s Charity Pot is a body lotion that helps your skin look good, but also helps you do good. The lotion itself is made from fair trade shea butter, rosewood oil, ylang-ylang and moringa oil.

But more than that, every Charity Pot sold helps. Proceeds help small grassroots organizations working in environmental conservation, animal welfare and human rights.

Keep it in mind during holiday shopping.
