Find the right shade of lipstick for you every single time

Beauty / July 31, 2020

You’d think that lipstick would be the last thing that would be on our minds as we wear masks to go outside. That’s not the case. Women are still wearing their lipstick whether it’s that transfer-proof one under their masks or their favorite one for that conference call.

Lipstick can make you look more put together. I also am a firm believer that it changes your mood quickly. Especially when the shade complements your skin perfectly.

No matter how many times it’s been written about, a guide on how to find your perfect lipstick shade is always needed. I feel that question come up again as I swiped on the new Rouge Hermes. This new venture from the heritage designer brand came to the Philippines just this year. They offer a wide array of colors from the loud Orange Boite to the subdued Beige Kalahari. If you’re warmer skin-toned, go for the former while neutral tones can get away with the latter.

But before I get ahead of myself with recommending which lipsticks to pick up, let’s get the first rule out there. Buying the perfect shade of lipstick from any label and in any shade is dependent on your skin tone and your undertone. It’s not enough to go by whether you’re fair-skinned or if you are a morena.

Undertones see our skin types in three different categories: Warm, cool, and neutral. Observe your veins and the colorations on your skin. If there’s a pink, red, or bluish hue to your skin,  you’re cool-toned. Warm-toned skin is characterized by hints of yellow, golden, or olive. Neutral tones can enjoy a wide arrange of choices with their pink and yellow in the base of their skin.

Now, let’s get to the lipstick. Cool-toned skin works with lipstick that has a blue or purple undertone. Get something like the Pat McGrath LuxeTrance Lipstick in Major Red. I find that this lipstick is smooth and very pigmented, one swipe is more than enough.

Warm tones will look great with some red or orange hues. One of my favorite makeup labels is Charlotte Tilbury. I have a few favorites of the Matte Revolution Lipstick as it is comfortable on the lips as it’s not drying. From this line, get something like the color Lost Cherry. It’s a bright fuschia that may look intimidating but trust me it blends well into dark skin tones.

As I mentioned earlier, those with neutral skin tones can get play around with more colors. You can go for various colors in the  Hourglass Confession Ultra Slim High-Intensity Refillable Lipstick like When I Was, which is a coral nude or go darker with the mauve tones of If Only.

Hermes Beauty is available at Rustan’s The Beauty Source. Check out sephora.ph for Pat McGrath Labs and Cult Beauty for Hourglass. Charlotte Tilbury can be found online through its official website.
