#ThrowbackThursday: Are You Ready for the Pouf to Come Back?

Fashion / July 13, 2017

Forget square shoulders and ruffles. It’s all about the bubble shapes now.

Last 2016, Nicole Kliest predicted about the impending comeback of the distinct silhouette on WhoWhatWear. We’re halfway through the year, and it looks like it’s time to brave the new wave of pouf.

I admit: It really is not the most universally flattering shape out there. Out of the many trends born from the ’80s that were resurrected in the later years, bubble skirts and dresses have the briefest moments. Those who are not into looking like mushrooms with legs or they have bigger limbs or hips definitely didn’t catch on.

But I’d like to think that this is actually pretty wearable. With the right pouf at the right places from the right designers, the bubble silhouette adds drama simple curves can’t give. They don’t drown you in its bulbous form; they simply give dimension. And contrary to popular belief, it can be bold and subtle if you let it.

Still don’t believe me?

I got to unearth these rare pictures of Christian Lacroix’s pieces for Jean Patou Haute Couture Spring/Summer 1987. The collection was never produced due to Lacroix’s breach of contract with the owners of Payou. Sad that it wasn’t, because if ever we needed a visual reminder of why the bubble shape was considered elegant, this is all we’ll need.
