Paris Hilton didn’t exactly invent the selfie. Ask Vincent Van Gogh whose self-portraits are priceless, among many of the world’s greatest artists who created a likeness of themselves. Creating an image of yourself is a philosophical question, a study in narcissism. But also, it’s just plain fun.

And before the megapixels in your phone outpaced actual amateur cameras, Paris Hilton flipped her phone open and created what would be one of the pillars of social media. On National Selfie Day, June 21, she acknowledged her influence along with Britney Spears. Who else?

On Instagram, Paris shares here a 2017 tweet that is, according to the heiress, how the selfie was created. She then captions it with “15 years ago,” noting that she and the pop princess selfied so we could Instagram a decade and a half ago.

God bless Paris.
