Asians Are Dominating the Runway

Fashion / October 14, 2016

Looks like there’s a serious power turnaround in the fashion industry. While Western names still strike as superior, Asian brands and designers are stepping up their game.

Sure, the likes of Comme des Garçons, Sacai, and Issey Miyake have risen to global relevance but a more diverse Asian roster is also catching attention. At least, it caught mine.

This side of the world is finally breaking out of the second-tier stereotype. No more counterfeit and copycat fashion—what we’ve got here is a talented bunch weaving their nationalism and quirks.

Let’s start locally. The Philippines alone have quite a number of rising designers. I’ve shown my support by wearing their creations, whether they’re veterans or emerging talents. If I have to name a favorite now, though, I have to recommend Gian Romano.

Breaking free from the twee mold, he has consistently delivered rebellious, daring, yet wearable collections. Black is his coolest color, while chic androgyny is his signature.

Then there’s Leyii of South Korea. Its cameo in vogue.com shows it’s relevant enough to be talked about. While considered a cult brand, its offerings have mainstream appeal. Its range of polished, minimalist silhouettes and clear-cut pieces give off a Lemaire vibe, but they’re also experimental in their details.

Taiwan’s Chun Ting Liu has also made ripples in Southeast Asia. Tagged as “Asia’s Most Promising Designer” at the Mercedez-Benz Stylo Asia Fashion Week in 2014, he’s been making rounds in the global fashion circuit.

I love the lightness of his pieces. His collections give off a luxurious feel, thanks to its translucent designs and interesting cuts. While elegant, they neither show off nor turn off with tacky details. It all boils down to how Chun injects luxury in the most ingenious ways.

Now I’d like to know the others. Which Asian designers and labels interest you?
